Watermelon said what?!

Isn't watermelon just sugar and water? Apparently not; it is one of the top five most nutritional fruits you can eat, believe it or not. Here are the facts.

Watermelon is rich in lycopene which helps maintain the elasticity of your skin cells. It's also rich in fiber and as most of you know fiber helps us metabolize quicker.

Watermelon seeds are an excellent source of protein, which helps build muscle tissue and in effect, burns fat. The seeds are about 35% protein, 50% oil, and 5% dietary fiber. Watermelon seed is also rich in micro- and macro-nutrients such as magnesium, calcium, potassium, iron, phosphorous, zinc etc.

But ladies, let’s be real here. What we real want to know is how to maintain a youthful look; lycopene. It is also found in tomatoes, apricots, papaya, pink grapefruit, and guava.

Research shows that drinking two cups of tomato juice per day provides about 40 mg of lycopene. Speaking of tomatoes, people who consumed tomato paste were found to have 33 per cent more protection against sunburn compared to the control group. Interesting, huh?

Attention to ladies with noisy biological clocks: lycopene benefits males who are having problems with infertility. Eating foods rich in this nutrient can help improve low sperm count by up to 63%.

Benefits abound but most importantly, lycopene is able to destroy free radicals in the body. Free radicals are thought to be a major cause for cancer and other illnesses. With that in mind, the foods we eat in N. America and the plastics we consume them from, that is important.

On a random note, read: “The research taps into one of the newest trends in nutritional foods - the ‘beauty from within’ segment, which is predicted to become a strong niche over the next few years.” What? Huh? Niche? Isn’t that the foundation of beauty?
