Now for some couture...

Vintage fashion is here to stay. Yay!

Mui Mui's Fall 2011 collection is a great showcase for vintage style, while dandelion clocks and lily of the valley repeated in plain or embroidered variations became the centerpiece for Mui Mui's fall collection.

Shortie-coatdresses with hyper-exaggerated shoulders which create the illusion of a smaller waist line. The line is based on Old Hollywood Glamour with accents such as forties sunglasses, and glitter shoes. Think Joan Crawford.

Prada wants to see us all in coatdresses, low-belted and drop-waisted shifts, and calf-length boots this fall. Her collection is sixties inspired with a hint of the AndrĂ© Courrèges, triangle silhouette. Skirts are four inches above the knee, boots patchworked from suede, snakeskin, glitter, cling to the calf with cluncky, curved heels. Bags are small, soft and tucked under the arm.

Referenced at the Christian Dior show was the postmodern Pop patterns the Italian designer Ettore Sottsass invented for his Memphis Group furniture and product design collective in the eighties; another look took inspiration from the work of the interior designers Jean-Michel Frank and Jean Dunand; a third was derived from Jean-Paul Goude.

In short, expect lots of pastel color and jazzy patterns, followed by darker marquetry and malachite prints from Dior this fall.

From Chanel expect to see textures of tweeds and sequins, grey tailored proportions, cut straight from top to bottom, or with molded peplum belling out of over a pencil skirt. Designed by the talented Karl Lagerfeld, of course. "Lagerfeld's delight in couture is to confuse the eye on many levels, rendering secrets which are often revealed only to the woman who orders the clothes." What can appear to be a matching suit actually breaks down to a spencer, bustier and pencil skirt. For evening, a "suit" becomes strapless dress, with the option to wear long, with a fluted embroidered petticoat frothing out from beneath, or without as a cocktail dress to the knee.

There was no jewelry on the runway. Private clients viewed the collection, based on the theme of black and white. The pieces are made in diamonds, onyx, crystal and pearls.

Also, a multiplicity of light-catching emedded sequins and flecks of Lurex done with trompe l'oeil techniques. What is that? It's an art technique involving extremely realistic imagery in order to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects appear in three dimensions. Such as:

Shea butter, also known as karite butter, is a cream-colored fatty substance made from the nuts of karite nut trees that grow in the Savannah regions of West and Central Africa. Karite trees, or shea trees, are not cultivated. They grow only in the wild.

Shea Butter is naturally rich in Vitamins A, E, and F, as well as a number of other vitamins and minerals.
It promotes skin renewal, increases the circulation, and accelerates wound healing. It contains an anti-inflammatory agent which is what helps with itching from bug bites, poison ivy, skin disorders, etc.

Not all shea butter products are created equal and some contain a significant amount of potentially irritating additives and very little real shea butter. Unrefined shea butter is superior in that it retains all its natural vitamins, especially vitamin A and vitamin E. Unrefined is the real deal. It is pure, insuring the most amount of nutritional value available. Don't be fooled by lotions that contain it. It will not have the same effect.

Simply rub some on your hands to spread it out and apply anywhere or everywhere…except the walls, you probably shouldn’t put it on your walls.

*Shea butter is not recommended for people with nut or latex allergies.

The Brooch is Back

You pull a fabulous dress from the back of your closet. "Why don't I where this?!" You put it on. "Oh." Try a brooch! Grab the fabric, twist it, bunch it and then... brunch it? You can create different looks, especially with the your choice of brooch. I like to do this and should take a picture to show you how effective it is. Shoulda, Coulda, woulda - I will. Check in.

A brook can reinvent a look entirely. Here are some examples:

It doesn't have to be a dress. Spruce up a casual tee or a tunic. It will do wonders.

Here are a couple in my shop. Click on the image for details.

The Wonder of Cola

Too much product in that hair, girl? Need a rinse? Or do you have hard water at your home? Hard water has a lot of calcium, magnesium and other dissolved minerals in it. Try pouring a bottle of club soda after washing then rinse with distilled water for pure, clean hair. The club soda will break up the minerals in your hair however, the minerals will linger. You will want to rinse it with distilled water because your shower water has the same minerals you just washed out.

Trick number two, this time coca-cola: pour a can of flat coke onto long hair and leave it in for a few minutes, wash thoroughly and you curls will dry perfectly separated!

Another cool trick with coke: Got GUM in your hair? We don't need to know how... but try dipping it in a bowl of coca-cola for a few minutes and the gum will wipe right off! Who knew?
*Careful not to leave in for too long if you have dyed hair. It will dissolve some of the hair dye; taking it off.

Oh! And another odd use for coca-cola is tanning. Put a can of coke in a spray bottle and add a little water. Spray all over before you lay out and BAM! You will walk away with one hell of a tan, my friends.

Bathroom Beauty

Those of us who live in Florida and other humid states have a different notion of the word oil then most. Oily skin. An unflattering coat of slippery something that breeds on our skin the minute we step out the door. We all live with it and you can cake your face in powder all day but, really? You don't really want to do that.

Want a quick, cheap, healthy fix? You may not like it, but it is very effective: toilet covers. That's right, those thin paper things you put over the toilet when you dare to sit. They are great for blotting and absorbing the oils on your face! Best used before sitting...and best not for sitting on.
