Have oily roots but no time to wash and blow dry? Throw some talcum powder on it and shake it out.

Ta da!
Some brands make them in tints. I don't think the tint is necessary. You will need to shake it in and shake it out to make sure it gets to all your roots evenly. Color could get on your clothes, floor, furniture or everywhere. Shake with your hands and rub into roots. If you don't it could be visible or worse, image walking in a gust of wind and brown dust following your trail. I should note that this would only be possible if you don't shake it out properly or live in Chicago.
You can use baby powder but it smells like baby power which is not good, but if it's all you have it's better than oily roots. I would go with a light colored talcum powder with no fragrance.
Bumble & Bumble makes a spray:

Sephora makes a spray on which claims to cleanse in two tones, light and dark: http://sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P216321&categoryId=B70
I've looked for powders specifically for hair at drug stores and never found one. Here is a link for an on-line shop that carries a lower end brand that it sprays on:

But powder is powder is powder. If all you have is loose make-up powder try it... those come in translucent. Oh! How about flour?! I'll tell you what; I'll experiment. I will put flour in my hair next time it's oily and write an update to this entry. I have a feeling it will be good. It has no scent and is light, why not? Oooo, and that would be really cheap.
Another trick is to use a boar bristle brush to spread the oil from your roots to your tips..p not t. This will make it look more like a product, such as shine serum, and naturally condition your hair. Which is what the oil is there for in the first place but why, why doesn't the oil form from the bottom up? Stupid law of nature. Obviously, brushing won't be a good idea on curly hair, so stay clear. Oily roots are better than half oily/half frizzy hair. Oh my g..., picture that! If only I could draw it. But if you have straight hair, give it a shot.
Well, there you have the power of powder. If you ever find a translucent spray on or try out cooking flour before I do; let us know!
