The Power of Powder - Hair Tricks

Have oily roots but no time to wash and blow dry? Throw some talcum powder on it and shake it out.

Before:
After:

Ta da!

Some brands make them in tints. I don't think the tint is necessary. You will need to shake it in and shake it out to make sure it gets to all your roots evenly. Color could get on your clothes, floor, furniture or everywhere. Shake with your hands and rub into roots. If you don't it could be visible or worse, image walking in a gust of wind and brown dust following your trail. I should note that this would only be possible if you don't shake it out properly or live in Chicago.

You can use baby powder but it smells like baby power which is not good, but if it's all you have it's better than oily roots. I would go with a light colored talcum powder with no fragrance.

Sephora makes a spray on which claims to cleanse in two tones, light and dark: http://sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P216321&categoryId=B70

I've looked for powders specifically for hair at drug stores and never found one. Here is a link for an on-line shop that carries a lower end brand that it sprays on:
http://www.drugstore.com/salon-grafix/qxb54312

But powder is powder is powder. If all you have is loose make-up powder try it... those come in translucent. Oh! How about flour?! I'll tell you what; I'll experiment. I will put flour in my hair next time it's oily and write an update to this entry. I have a feeling it will be good. It has no scent and is light, why not? Oooo, and that would be really cheap.

Another trick is to use a boar bristle brush to spread the oil from your roots to your tips..p not t. This will make it look more like a product, such as shine serum, and naturally condition your hair. Which is what the oil is there for in the first place but why, why doesn't the oil form from the bottom up? Stupid law of nature. Obviously, brushing won't be a good idea on curly hair, so stay clear. Oily roots are better than half oily/half frizzy hair. Oh my g..., picture that! If only I could draw it. But if you have straight hair, give it a shot.

Well, there you have the power of powder. If you ever find a translucent spray on or try out cooking flour before I do; let us know!

Here's some tips for y'all:

If your hair is oily and you can't shower, throw some talcum powder on it and shake it out. Preferably one that smells good.

If you get cut or burned and don't want a nasty scar, a natural cure for this is to grab an egg and crack it open, take out the umbilical cord aka the little white string-like thing attached to the egg white. Now rub that on your cut or whatever. I personally would use mederma, but if you don't have that around grab an egg.

Mederma, in case you haven't heard about is very effective. You can get it at drug stores. It was recommended to me by a pharmacist and I have the proof..wait, actually don't have the proof; if you but that stuff on as soon as you get cut or burned, it leaves little to no evidence.=

Let's see...

Have a loose string hanging from your dress? burn it. the burned end will help keep it in place.

something not fitting right? try a brooch.

milk is good for your hair. soak in it.

do the clothes you picked up at the thrift shop have that thrifty smell? add some vinegar to the water when you clean it. wash again. problem solved.

stain on white? soak some lemon on it and let it sit in the sun.

smelly shoes? let them soak in the sun

An Etsy Art Find and a Short Story

I love these prints I found on etsy. They spoke to me. "But what did they say?", you may ask with a wink. In third grade I got in trouble and the teacher told me to write some bs sentence over 100 times. I drew him a picture and said, 'a picture is worth a thousand words, so this should cover it'. Enjoy!

Watermelon said what?!

Isn't watermelon just sugar and water? Apparently not; it is one of the top five most nutritional fruits you can eat, believe it or not. Here are the facts.

Watermelon is rich in lycopene which helps maintain the elasticity of your skin cells. It's also rich in fiber and as most of you know fiber helps us metabolize quicker.

Watermelon seeds are an excellent source of protein, which helps build muscle tissue and in effect, burns fat. The seeds are about 35% protein, 50% oil, and 5% dietary fiber. Watermelon seed is also rich in micro- and macro-nutrients such as magnesium, calcium, potassium, iron, phosphorous, zinc etc.

But ladies, let’s be real here. What we real want to know is how to maintain a youthful look; lycopene. It is also found in tomatoes, apricots, papaya, pink grapefruit, and guava.

Research shows that drinking two cups of tomato juice per day provides about 40 mg of lycopene. Speaking of tomatoes, people who consumed tomato paste were found to have 33 per cent more protection against sunburn compared to the control group. Interesting, huh?

Attention to ladies with noisy biological clocks: lycopene benefits males who are having problems with infertility. Eating foods rich in this nutrient can help improve low sperm count by up to 63%.

Benefits abound but most importantly, lycopene is able to destroy free radicals in the body. Free radicals are thought to be a major cause for cancer and other illnesses. With that in mind, the foods we eat in N. America and the plastics we consume them from, that is important.

On a random note, read: “The research taps into one of the newest trends in nutritional foods - the ‘beauty from within’ segment, which is predicted to become a strong niche over the next few years.” What? Huh? Niche? Isn’t that the foundation of beauty?

The Right Link at The Right Time

I am new to etsy, but before I opened shop I did tons of research on everything from running a business to fashion trends. Tons. I also did a lot of vintage searching; many miles worth. It wasn't research but it was a lot of fun of course, until it's time to pay.

I have a small studio set up which is cool, unless you see it.  Now someone I don't even know, noticed my store?!! I can't help but get giddy and I want everyone to know.

My store was featured on "Off to a good start" by fernfiddlehead http://www.etsy.com/shop/fernfiddlehead

Here is the feature: http://www.etsy.com/treasury/4d50053ced226d91a10882fc/off-to-a-good-start

It looks easy, but takes a lot of time. I've been working non stop...except for this weekend. It was fun-filled in these descriptive words: resort executive suite, stripper, champagne, lots of men, lots of shots, lots of yelling, lots of stumbling, the beach and more ;) It doesn't take too much guessing to figure out what that was. I have never seen so many men buy an almost bride so many drinks! I guess it's the almost part that does the trick. I am not the bride to be, btw.

However, as amazing as last weekend was, I couldn't stop thinking about what I should be doing. But it didn't stop the fun. The other aspect I'm enjoying is creating the shop. I haven't sold a thing yet, but it is so exciting! It's mine so I care a lot. The difference for me between working for yourself or for someone else is that you do it because you want to. It's work even if I haven't made a cent.....yet ;)

Boxed-up Inspiration

I am obsessed with this handmade Italian diorama. It sits on my desk and I can't stop myself from peeking over at it while I 'internet'. I couldn't even tell you why. It's a vintage find from an antique shop and it's the love of my life. Maybe it's our chemistry. Maybe it's the fact that there are real seeds in the jars and one of them are pot seeds.

I often wonder about the story behind it. I know it sounds a bit cheesy, but I really do. Only certain objects seduce me this way. Anyhow, this find is all mine :)
I used to make dioramas when I was younger. I wish I knew what I did with them. I went rummaging through my parents garage to look for them. No luck, but I did find a tent and a huge box of tapes! George Michael, Faith no More, Violent Femmes, Mr. Bungle, MIX TAPES, a tape of my childhood bestie and I singing remixes to songs "like row, row, row, your boat" and some free-style beats. We were like 7/8. It was both terrible and amazing. The name of our band was "Germantha". We were pretty serious about it. We developed an image: 80's hot pink, and blue with white bloomingdale's plastic bags which we cut arms and leg holes out of. Florescent yellow lace accessories. By accessories, I mean cut up strips of this..florescent yellow lace material and tied them to most our body parts; including the waist to hold up the plastic bags. We had a club house/rehearsal studio in the back of my parents house where we practiced our dance numbers and, we sat in the middle of a trinity of interestingly shaped, leaning palm trees to sing and record our songs. Maybe I'll put up our album up in my shop; that's vintage right.... ;)

Well, I just went off on a limb in the name of nostalgia. As I was saying, I'm dieing to make some dioramas again. It will be a project one day. I would probably cut out pictures and layer them in a box to create a scene, how I use to make them. I'd like to try some new stuff with wood, as well. I just remembered where I can find one; made one for a friend. I'll try to convince him to send me a picture of it so I can see it again...that is if his girlfriend didn't throw it away.

Although I am keeping my super cool little diorama that probably no one else would ever want, I just took photos of the most beautiful butterflies in glass shadowboxes for etsy and they are to DIE for. I can't believe I'm letting them go...here is one of my favorites, it's a Morpho Amathonte real butterfly:

Biolage Shampoo by Lauren Borowsky

Here is something that ticks me off...
Biolage shampoo... its been around forever.
It used to be that it was only available in high end salons.  Over the years it transgressed-- Super Cuts and the Hair Cuttery began to sell it.  In the past year it has become widely available at CVS and even Walgreens.  Recently I found myself desperate for shampoo and conditioner Without a salon open in sight, I had no choice but to run to CVS.  I saw Bioloage shampoo and conditioner on the shelf. Immediately i conjured up memories of Biolage in my hair--that lovely grapefruit aroma and smooth soft hair post conditioning treatment. I bought the duo, shampoo and conditioner.  Excited to get them home and lather my hair up, I quickly became disillusioned. The Biolage conditioner that once left my hair so silky smooth was no more.  This Biolage left my hair coarse and knotted!  It was horrible. So horrible I had to try it out again a couple days letter. Again, the conditioner left my hair in the same abused condition.  My poor hair.

Lesson learned-- stay far from drugstore shampoos and conditioners.

1951 Red Balenciaga Hat and 40's Inspired Fur Coats

The Classic Beauty. Photograph by Clifford Coffin. Stunning picture. She is wearing the perfect shade of red and it matches the hat, too. Cool. Aside from that, I imagine this hat would be hard to pull off.

1940's glamour is back and with it came fur. However, faux is just as fashionable as real fur. Luckily, one is frowned upon and the other is not. If you must have a real one, I'd suggest picking up a vintage fur.

Above are some designer vintage inspired, faux fur coats.
